MEET THE NEW DIRECTOR

Concept

The 32° Masonic Learning Centers for Children, Inc. came into being at the Masonic Hall, Newtonville, Massachusetts in affiliation with the Reading Disabilities Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993. The following year the Center concept was adopted by the 15 northeastern states, which comprise the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. Presently, the 15 states have Centers in operation providing free Orton-Gillingham therapy for Dyslexic children.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurologically based, often familial, disorder, which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. It varies in degrees of severity, and is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and sometimes in arithmetic.

Dyslexia is not a result of lack of motivation, sensory impairment, inadequate instructional or environmental opportunities or other limiting conditions, but may occur together with these conditions. Although Dyslexia is a lifelong handicap, individuals with Dyslexia frequently respond well to appropriate treatment.

Canton Learning Center

The Canton Center, is located in the Masonic Temple at 836 Market Ave. North, Canton Ohio and contains six tutoring rooms offering free Orton-Gillingham remedial help on a one-to-one basis to school-aged children, age 5 to 18 years old, who have been identified as having Dyslexia.

Children are accepted regardless of race, religion or socioeconomic status. All learning materials are provided to the children free of charge. All tutors are certified in the Orton-Gillingham method.
