Greetings Brethren! It’s time for the leaf blowers already. Why is summer so short? If I can’t be boating it might just as well be cooler but, I really do enjoy the month of October. It’s actually one of my favorite months. October, as you know, is a busy month for the fraternity; a new Grand Master and in our case, a new District Deputy Grand Master. All I can say about that is who ever it may be, they have some “BIG” shoes to fill literally, and a “tall order to fill” literally. You all have seen R.W.Bro. Mike Bailey. I have enjoyed the time I have spent with him and he was a great District Deputy Grand Master. Thank you for your service to the fraternity and to our lodge. Hearty thanks also to, McKinley Lodge’s own, R.W.Bro. Gust Goutras as well; for installing me and mentoring me through the years and his dedication to our fraternity. And, R.W.Bro. Steven Colton, thank you for your service. These three men really helped all of the lodges do well these last three years and I’m sure they have found excellent replacements, because if they didn’t, we know where they live; LOL. I’m sure R.W.Bro. Lengler will get them up to speed.

I’m sure your wondering about what the heck I mean about “Judo vs. Masonry” for our program on the 10th. Well guess what? Come to lodge and find out!

Since I have the microphone here, I would like to chime in on a couple of things about “My” view of our fraternity and its future. The basic concept of our fraternity is “Making Good Men Better, through the practice of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.” Every Mason knows this, but as an officer and as Master you dig deep into the ritual and I have come to realize that the “Ideals of Masonry” are almost perfect. The only problem is that human beings are not. One of the best tenants of our institution is the diversity of our brethren, my favorite line is; “the internal and not the external qualifications of a man is what Masonry regards.” Most of us interpret that as status, wealth or power and when we are together we are all the same. But is that entirely true? Are we all the same? We all have the same goals in mind, we all love Masonry. Unfortunately sometimes are diversity is our “Achilles Heel.” So, let’s dig deeper into the above line; let’s look at our faces in lodge not our clothes, our hearts. What do you see? Think about it? Our elders and our younger members, I’m 46, my J.W. Warden is 33; we have many members in their twenties and many in their seventies and eighties; it doesn’t get much more diverse than that. I have heard the word “Change” thrown around a lot lately and not in a good way and right now our lodge and our fraternity are on a “cusp” of change. Some may view it as out with the old and in with the new, some love change, some hate it, but it doesn’t have to be scary or horrible. These changes are cyclic and have happened throughout the hundreds of years our fraternity has existed. For example: how about learning the ritual from mouth to ear, without a book, I’m sure many Masons hated that change, 200 years ago would this Bulletin even existed? 50 years ago fathers never even asked their sons to join they had to wait for the son to ask them. Throughout these cycles our ideals haven’t changed, just the way we communicate them, that’s all. It’s not the end of the fraternity or the world. If we need to make changes to keep it going then, “So Mote it Be,” it doesn’t need to happen overnight, it can happen gradually and not everyone will like it, but if “Facebook” and texts work, why not use them? Phone calls and newsletters work too. To me it doesn’t matter how the light is spread, just that it is spread. I respect our elders and value them and in no way do I want them to feel slighted. If it wasn’t for them we would not exist, but on the other hand, we won’t exist in the future without “tempering” the way we communicate and operate. The fraternity will survive as long as we keep our ideals just the way they are. Perfect.

Respectfully

Mark J. Gold, W.M.

Wednesday Oct 1 Stated Meeting
Wednesday Oct 15 Stated Meeting – Facebook Friendship Night
Wednesday Oct 17-18 Grand Lodge
Wednesday Oct 29 Bean and Chili Dinner
Wednesday Nov 5 Stated Meeting – Election of Officers
Wednesday Nov 19 Stated Meeting – Veterans Appreciation Night
Well Brothers, my year as Master is coming to an end and I want to thank every member of the lodge for letting me have the honor of serving you this year. We still have some great events planned before the installation, however this will be my last article for the bulletin. Next month I will be assisting Brother Bob Wiley in writing the bulletin.
As promised our lodge now has a LinkedIn account and a Twitter account for announcements. Links are at the bottom of our website at http://www.canton60freemasons.com/. All announcements will be posted on the website and our Facebook page, as well. This is part of our communication plan to reach more brethren.
October 15th we will be having a Facebook Friendship night. I will be posting an event on our Facebook page and a picture invitation every week until the event. If you are on Facebook please SHARE this and help it go viral. I want it to get to all your non-Masonic friends. We will be inviting them into our meeting during refreshment and give them a short presentation on masonry and answer questions. Petitions will be available upon request. Then we will have an officer give them a tour of the building as we close and invite them downstairs for food. Let’s find out how many people use social media. Help me spread this to all your friends.
October 29th at 5:PM will be our annual chili dinner. This year it will be coordinated by our Junior Warden and former chef Eric Muehlenbein. You do not want to miss this one.  We missed his gourmet food after he left from steward so much, we almost didn’t let him advance. Just kidding Eric. Oct 17th and 18th is Grand Lodge and your top three officers will be in attendance. November 5th will be the election of officers and November 19th will be our Veteran’s Appreciation Night. So come to lodge brothers and join in on the fun.

Hello Companions! I hope you all had a great summer. I am very excited to get back to Masonry. I did a little reading over the summer to better understand the degrees in council. A lot of you will know most of what I learned but I figured I would share a little bit for all the new companions who have joined us last year.

The degrees of the York Rite are classified as Symbolic: (Lodge of Master Masons). Capitular: (Chapter of Royal Arch Masons) Cryptic; (Council of Cryptic Masons) and Chivalric; (Commander of Knights Templar) The Cryptic Rite or degrees derives its name from the setting of the degrees of Royal Master and Select Master Degrees in the underground crypt beneath King Solomon’s Temple. The word “cryptic”, means hidden. Hence its use in describing the above degrees.

The Super Excellent Degree does not take place in the Crypt but does relate to certain events that involved the Crypt; so it is included. These three degrees are very beautiful and meaningful as they complete the story you started to learn as an entered apprentice.

I look forward to seeing you all again and having a great year.

If you would like to learn more visit the Ohio Grand Council’s web page and take the Cell Courses. They are very informative and free. If you complete them you will receive a certificate of completion from the Grand Council. Log into, ohio-council-masons.org for the program.

Thanks to each of you who help with the dinners for Scottish Rite and also the recent corn roast; it was a great success. Thank you again and we have a couple small dinners in the future; I will keep you posted.

We each have friends who belong to our beautiful fraternity. We should ask them to join the York Rite to further their knowledge in Masonry, especially Commandery.

There are a number of changes coming from Grand Commandery this year. We will keep you all informed, better yet, come to our stated meetings and hear first hand. Let’s all continue to work together to make Canton Commandery No. 38 one of the best in the state of Ohio.

Thank you Sir Knights for all you do!

Grand Chapter will be held in Dayton, Ohio on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th, 2014.

We had a wonderful picnic at Pat and Al Slater’s farm in July. Al was the chief griller. There was lots of good food and we all had fun playing Bingo after dinner. Even the weather cooperated and all who attended had a good time.

We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and are refreshed and ready to return to our fall meetings. It will be great to see everyone again.

A card was sent to congratulate Jamey and Ashley Groetz on the birth of their new baby girl, Julia Rose. She was also welcomed into this world by her brother and two sisters, Jay, Justine and Jessica on May 23rd, 2014.

Congratulations were also sent to Marc Shefelton on his graduation from seminary which was sponsored by Delta Chapter through ESTARL.

Sympathy cards were sent to Paul Feaser on the death of his father; also to the family’s of Janet Hill and Gladys Tripplett, due to the death of her husband.

Get well cards were sent to Carolyn Herrick who is recuperating from a back injury and also to Larry Kerns (Past Grand Matron’s husband who served with Trevor Sproul;) who had surgery; also to Dawn Thomas for her surgery; to Heather Norris who has been ill; and also to Diane Phillips who was in the hospital.

If you have not already done so, please see that Pat Slatzer receives your 2014-15 dues. They are $35.00 and must be paid by October 1, 2014.

There are only three meetings left in our term and they will all be “short form” openings. We saved them until the end so it would be easier to have all our memorization work done by June.

Johnnie and I are looking forward to seeing all of you again at our September Stated Meeting.

Brethren! If you would like to come to a Masonic meeting or event and do not have a ride; call us and we will make arrangements! I want to make sure everyone who wants to come has the opportunity to come to our meetings. That includes Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite events and York Rite events.

Our website is now up and operational at http://www.canton60freemasons.com and can be displayed on tablets and smart phones as well your computer. I am making this Masonic web template available to any other Masonic body who wants it as well. If you are on “Facebook” there is a link at the bottom to our “Facebook” page. By the time this article comes out I hope to have a link to a “Youtube” channel, a Linked-In account and a “Twitter” account for the lodge also. This will put us in all the most popular social media sites. This is all part of our goal to keep the lodge going forward into the 21st Century. Some of the new features of the website include a list of all current officers and past masters, the ability to download a petition and an inquiry form to request information about our lodge. There is also a link to “SuggestionOx,” which is a website we are using to collect anonymous suggestions on ways to improve the lodge and our meetings. Do you have a great idea on how we can make ourselves better? Please send it in. There are plans in the works to do an electronic newsletter and update our old projector so come on out and see what all the excitement is about. But we will continue using this newsletter and traditional forms of communication, even though there are new things.

To facilitate a better succession plan and since inspection season is now over, the Senior Warden and Junior Warden will be conferring degrees on any candidate in the degree of their inspection year. This should give them a jump start on learning their parts and keep our officers sharp so that every member of Canton Lodge No. 60 can be proud of them and our lodge.

We are developing a membership committee to help the lodge grow and a committee for brothers in need. If anyone wished to help on those committees please contact me or Gary Dressler the Secretary.

If you have any interest in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, now is the time to petition because they are planning their next reunion October 23rd thru October 25th. The Shrine is having their next hot sands in November and The York Rite is also accepted new petitions. I have seen huge improvements in all these organizations in the last year.

Canton No. 60 will have a ladies appreciation night Wednesday, September 17th. Anyone interested in bringing their ladies please RSVP to the secretary or myself. Our ladies are well deserving of this honor since they have supported us through our Masonic endeavors.

Wednesday, October 29th will be our annual Chili and Bean Dinner so you’ll not want to miss that night. I hope to see everyone in lodge.

Steve Morosko, Worshipful Master

Well Brethren, the summer is almost over and time is clicking by fast. I hope all of you had an enjoyable vacation but, now it’s time to get back to work. We have an exciting September planned. We are going to hit the ground hard right away with our McKinley Observance at the National Memorial at 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 12th followed by a dinner at 6:00 p.m. at the Temple and then lodge. If you have never witnessed this ceremony, please come out and observe as we honor our lodges’ namesake.

Our outdoor lodge this year will be at the same place as always, Greenport Tactical. We will post all the info needed on “Facebook” and all the lodges in the district will receive fliers. This is a very fun event for us so come and watch as we confer the Master Mason Degree by the light of torches and campfires. Bring jackets and chairs, it may get chilly. We will have a Military theme again this year to honor all our veterans throughout all of time; and the food will be great as always. They don’t call us “The Belly Lodge” for no reason, my weight was 185lbs. when I became a member….and look at me now.

We had a lodge trip in the beginning of August to the beautiful town of Marietta, Ohio. We visited American Union Lodge No. 1 and had an awesome lunch prepared by their brethren. Wor. Bro. William Reynolds P.M. and the current L.E.O. gave us a tour of the Temple and enlightened us on the early history of the first lodge in the Northwest Territory and also the formation of: The Grand Lodge of Ohio and the first Grand Master. Then later we boarded a stern wheeler boat for a dinner cruise on the Ohio River after which we retired to the historic Lafayette Hotel. We all had a very good time. A little trivia for you…the name Ohio is a Native American word that means: “Beautiful River.”

Brethren all of you know that we lost an “Icon” in our lodge this summer. It seems summer sometimes isn’t kind to our lodge; just as it wasn’t last summer with the passing of Wor. Bro. Beaver. R. Wor. Bro. William S. Merriman was one of a kind for sure and it will be impossible to replace the void that his passing left behind. His booming voice, his dedication and his mere presence were incredible to say the least. He will be missed however, this is life and we will carry on. We have a great lodge, full of great Masons. We have many “Icons” in our lodge. I just wish I could see more of them on the side lines on Friday evenings. So get your butts back to lodge; that’s an order right from the top. The same goes for the newer Brethren! Don’t worry about anything; just come back and let us show you what this fraternity is all about. You’ve invested your time to join, now reap the rewards of your investment. I have some interesting programs coming up! I’m not done yet!

Remember brethren, we will be voting on the By-laws changes the first stated meeting back on Friday, September 12th after the President and Brother, William McKinley Observance program. See you in lodge.

Mark J. Gold W.M.
